If you've had the joy of watching your pet grow up, you've seen him go through all kinds of changes. Unfortunately, some of the changes that afflict aging pets can be less than enjoyable--notably arthritis, that common, age-related scourge of humans and pets alike. But now your pet and other animals in Westlake Village and surrounding areas can experience safe, effective relief from that pain, stiffness, and inflammation. That's because Anza Animal Clinic offers state-of-the-art laser therapy to help your pet feel and function better.
"Arthritis" is something of a catch-all term to describe any of a number of conditions that cause inflammation of the joints. While some cases of arthritis are related to autoimmune dysfunction or infectious agents such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, most arthritis in pets is degenerative in nature. Osteoarthritis occurs when the smooth, cushioning layer of cartilage between bones ends starts to thin and break down after years of wear and tear. The resulting bone-on-bone friction is not only painful, but it also causes the formation of extra bone that stiffens the joints. Your pet may have trouble walking, lying down, standing up or climbing.
While anti-inflammatory drugs or even surgery (in severe cases) can help reduce and manage arthritis in pets, some pets aren't healthy enough to tolerate these treatments, while many owners would prefer a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical answer -- which is exactly what laser therapy offers. Compared to surgical lasers, therapeutic lasers operate at a lower frequency level, emitting a beam that passes harmlessly through the skin. Beneath the skin surface, the light energy increases ATP production in cells, giving them more of the "fuel" they need to repair and regenerate themselves. It also enhances blood flow to the treatment site, helping the tissues expel inflammatory substances that cause pain and swelling. Laser therapy can even prompt the body to produce its own natural painkillers, substances known as endorphins.
Either veterinarian on our two-vet team at Anza Animal Clinic can prescribe and administer our Multilocked Laser System (MLS) therapy for arthritic pets who can benefit from the procedure. For smaller animals, a typical session may take just 10 minutes. We may recommend 2 to 3 sessions a week at first, with less frequent sessions after that. Many pets show signs of reduced pain and increased mobility that very first week. We don't even have to shave the treatment area or make other elaborate preparations; your pet simply lies down and enjoys a soothing, relaxing treatment!
