At Anza Animal Clinic, our veterinarians are committed to providing your pets with the highest standard of care in the Westlake Village, Lake Sherwood, Newbury Park, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, and Westlake Village areas. Whether your pet is in need of a routine exam and vaccinations, or something more serious, our experienced team is here to help. Still, one of the more common services we offer is that of vaccinating puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats.
Keeping dogs and cats up-to-date on vaccines is a must, regardless of how much time your pet may spend outdoors. By failing to vaccinate your pet, you could be putting not only your dog or cat at risk, but others your pet comes into contact with as well. Furthermore, many boarding facilities, groomers, and other pet care providers these days require proof of up-to-date vaccinations in order to render services.
If your pet is due for vaccines or immunizations, you may understandably have some questions about pet vaccination. To help with these, we've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions we receive in our office and their subsequent answers.
The only way for us to determine which vaccines your pet is due for is to assess your pet and his or her previous vet records in our office. However, we generally recommend puppies and kittens to begin receiving booster vaccines as early as 6-9 weeks, with additional sets every few weeks through the age of 16 weeks. Other additional vaccines we may recommend for your cat or dog include:
Our veterinarians carefully select vaccines to be sure we are using the safest and gentlest available. Our cat vaccines are non- adjuvented for extra safety.
Side effects are rarely serious, though some pets may experience a bit of lethargy after receiving a vaccine; this is more common in smaller dog breeds. Our doctors will make an evaluation and reduce the dose on patients that may experience problems. However, if you notice any fever, swelling, or vomiting after your pet receives a vaccine, be sure to seek veterinary care.
Our veterinarians recommend vaccinations in conjunction with an annual wellness exam; this is especially important for kittens and puppies, as vaccines given to a sick pet may not be as effective or could even weaken the pet's immune system. Therefore, we like to make sure a pet is healthy before administering any vaccines.
This will depend on the vaccines your pet receives. For rabies vaccines, a three-year vaccine is now relatively common for use in veterinary offices. However, your pet may still need other vaccinations every year or two. When you have your pet vaccinated in our office, our veterinary team provides you with a schedule as well as reminders for when your pet needs its next vaccinations. This way, you don't have to worry about forgetting!
