A Common Concern that Pet Owners have that Prefer Non-Anesthesia: Is Anesthesia Safe for Your Pet?
One of the most common questions pet owners have about veterinary dental cleanings is whether or not they should have their pet placed under anesthesia during the procedure. It’s important to note that anesthesia is completely safe for pets so long as the proper precautions are taken and the pet is constantly monitored while under anesthesia. Furthermore, anesthesia helps our veterinary staff conduct a thorough cleaning and is much less stressful for your pet.
Here in our Thousand Oaks veterinary office, our veterinarians conduct any necessary diagnostics, including blood work, before your pet’s dental procedure. This allows us to make sure we know the proper dosage of anesthesia to give your pet. Once your pet is placed under anesthesia, we’ll carefully monitor all of his or her vital signs throughout the entire process to ensure everything is going well until your pet has made a full recovery.
Understanding Non-Anesthetic Dental Options for Your Dog or Cat
In our Thousand Oaks veterinary office, our veterinarians also offer a service known as “twilight anesthesia,” which is different from traditional anesthesia in the sense that your pet is sedated but not placed under full anesthesia. This is typically a good solution for pets that have found to not be ideal candidates for general anesthesia due to medical conditions or size. With twilight dentistry, our veterinarians are still able to remove bacteria, tartar, and plaque from the visible parts of the teeth and do so in a thorough manner that does not cause excessive stress to your pet.
With twilight anesthesia in cats and dogs, we use a significantly smaller amount of anesthetic so that your pet remains conscious and awake, yet is much more relaxed. As a result, your pet will have a better chance of remaining calm and still during the teeth cleaning procedure, so our veterinary staff is able to do a more careful and thorough job of removing plaque and tartar from the teeth. However, it is important to keep in mind that full anesthesia is highly recommended for doing any cleaning underneath the gum line, which may be necessary to remove tartar build-up that could otherwise cause gum disease or gingivitis.
